GUIDANCE

Guidance & Discernment

When asking for guidance it is also important to ask God to give you discernment when you have a hard time trying to let go of things or hold on to things.

Discernment is:

     1. the ability to judge well.
        "an astonishing lack of discernment

     2. (in Christian contexts) perception in the                 absence of judgment with a view to                       obtaining spiritual guidance and                           understanding.

Discernment is not just the ability to differentiate between right and wrong, or good and bad but it assists us in evaluating situations and choosing the best course of action, while realizing the moral implications and truth and falsehoods involved.  It can also act as a guide that leads us closer to certain people, places, and/or things or causes us to separate ourselves from certain people, places and/or things.

Discernment is almost like a spiritual intuition that alerts you to something or draws your attention towards something. It is in a sense spiritual knowledge and natural and spiritual wisdom.

Have you ever been in the presence of someone and although you could not explain it, something about their spirit bothered your spirit?  It's almost as if you could see their intentions on their sleeves and God led you away from them. This can sometimes be a form of discernment. At times God will allow you to see the intent and trickery of people almost as to provide you a warning.

There are even times in which you may want to do something or to go somewhere but God tugs on your heart so bad that it prevents you from doing or going to the particular place and then something happens causing you to realize God kept you from being in that particular place preventing or saving you from a catastrophe.

Or has God ever put someone in your spirit so bad that you could almost feel their thoughts
and you end up reaching out only to find out that they were going through a rough patch or dealing with an illness or life altering circumstance?

Discernment can help you to approach situations from a Godly perspective, especially if someone has offended you or even in cases where you see someone do something wrong and you wrestle with whether or not it is your place to correct them. Sometimes discernment will cause you to not approach a situation but rather to just pray for an individual and at other times God may lead you to correct the individual.

One of the biggest mistakes that believers make is their approach in trying to "share the gospel" or "correct what they see as sin. " God does not lead us to attack people with the word. We must humble ourselves and share the word in a way that aligns with God's attributes. If we are correcting someone we must first check and humble ourselves. Discernment is not about judgement.

Discernment comes in different forms, but all rooted in God and His Spirit. We don't always recognize discernment as we see it as "intuition" or a "hunch" that something is wrong. That is why we should also pray:

“I am your servant; give me discernment, so that I may know your statuses” (Psalm119:125, NIV).

The God's Word translation reads as:

"I am your servant, help me to understand, so that I may come to know your written instruction." (Psalm 119:125, GW).

Discernment is a sense of being able to distinguish between truth and lie (false). When you know God's word it is hard to be led into false teachings. This is when discernment is of extreme importance. You may hear many teachings of the gospel or you may have had someone witness to you but in your spirit, you knew their words were not aligned with God. There are many people who create their own gospel making it even harder for those who are trying to grow in Christ to distinguish between truth and lie. Fact from fiction.

Remember that God knows your heart and He wants you to seek Him with your concerns especially as you try to distinguish between what God says versus what the world says. We are not perfect and we are going to make mistakes.  We are not always going to make the best decisions, but if we pray continually asking God to lead and direct our paths and be willing to act on His instructions, we will grow stronger in our ability to choose wisely, to act with our moral compasses, and to be better equipped to tackle decisions in our daily walks.

God's word never fails.

David's Prayers for Guidance

Psalm 143:10

"Teach me to do Your will,
For You are my God;
Let Your good Spirit lead me on level ground"

Psalm 31:3

"For You are my rock and my fortress;
For Your name’s sake You will lead me

and guide me."

King Solomon's words
to his son:

Proverbs 3:5–6
"Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him, and he
will make straight your paths."

Proverbs teaches us about wisdom, acting in Godly character and grasping God's instruction. King Solomon, son of David, was one of the wisest men of the bible as God blessed him with wisdom after a request:

Reference 1 KINGS 3:5-14

5 At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”

6 Solomon answered, “You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day.

7 “Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties.

8 Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number.

9 So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?”

10 The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this.

11 So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice,

12 I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.

13 Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings.

14 And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.”

Paul's Advice

Romans 12:2
"Do not be conformed to this world, but
be transformed by the renewal of your
mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and
acceptable and perfect."

Isaiah's words to Judah

Isaiah 30:21
"Whether you turn to the right or to
the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying,
“This is the way; walk in it.”
